[20100409] EFree Postdoctoral Associate in High-Pressure Neutron Science

The Energy Frontier Research in Extreme Environments (EFree) Center at the Geophysical Laboratory has a current opening for a postdoctoral researcher working in high-pressure neutron science. The EFree Center is a Department of Energy funded, large-scale partnership between the Geophysical laboratory, 8 Universities and 6 National Laboratories. It was established in 2009, with a mandate to pursue fundamental research into novel materials and properties under extreme conditions. The EFree neutron program is a core component of the Center’s activities, and offers a broad range of scientific opportunities for the successful candidate.

The position will be based at the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington, DC, however, frequent travel to national neutron facilities should be expected. The EFree Center has active partnerships with both the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge, TN and the LANSCE Facility at Los Alamos, NM.

The successful candidate will be involved in developing high-pressure neutron diffraction techniques, and is also expected to pursue an active science program with a focus on novel, energy-relevant materials. In addition to neutron science, use of complementary synchrotron x-ray facilities and the many other in-house characterization probes available within the EFree Center will be highly encouraged.

A background in high-pressure structural science is essential, and experience of large scale neutron and/or synchrotron facilities would be considered a strong advantage. A PhD in physics, chemistry or a related field is a requirement of this position. The successful candidate is expected to be able to able to work independently and to develop their own clear scientific agenda.
