[20200615] Cool electrons in Flatlands (virtual workshop, Catania, Italy, June 15-24, 2020)

The international workshop Cool Electrons in Flatlands 2020 (CEF2020) will take place online on June 15-24, 2020, and will be hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy "Ettore Majorana", University of Catania, Italy.

Professor Klaus von Klitzing (Nobel Prize for Physics, 1985) will deliver the opening lecture on Monday, June 15, 2020, at 15:00 CEST.

The discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect in Si MOSFET by Klaus von Klitzing in 1980 has launched an exciting research field dealing with quantum phenomena in two dimensional (2D) systems. Over the years, other successful realizations of 2D systems have become available, bringing further fascinating discoveries. One famous example is a modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure which allowed first observations of fractional quantum Hall effects, stripe and bubble phases, microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero-resistance states, etc. More recent realizations of 2D systems include graphene, oxide interfaces, and transition metal dichalcogenides.

Year 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the discovery of quantum Hall effect and the 25th anniversary of the prediction of quantum Hall stripe and bubble phases.

The workshop aims to bring together leading world experts and young researchers working on various aspects of 2D systems to discuss ongoing developments and exchange ideas.

Detailed program, and more information on how to attend, are available on the workshop's webpage http://cef2020.dfa.unict.it/
