[20140700] Post-doc, experimental high pressure material research, US Army Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Grounds (MD), USA

The US Army Research Laboratory, located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, seeks applications for a postdoctoral position for an experimental scientist in the field of high-pressure and material research activities. Primary responsibilities include measurement of material behavior in response to pressure and temperature extremes utilizing Infrared and laser based spectroscopies, x-ray diffraction, and other static high-pressure experimental capabilities. We are seeking a mature, competent, self-motivated scientist who shows ingenuity and proficiency in using state-of-the-art experimental techniques and innovative, integrated strategies to pursue challenging, interdisciplinary problems.

Successful candidates would meet the following qualifications:
. Applicants should have received a Doctoral Degree in Physical Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics or a closely related discipline within the last five years or should be completing the requirements to receive a degree by the start of the appointment. Before appointment, each applicant must present evidence of having received a Ph.D., Sc.D., or other earned research doctoral degree recognized in U.S. academic circles as equivalent to a Ph.D. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
. The position is open to all qualified U.S. citizens.
. Research experience in solid state chemistry and/or novel material synthesis under extreme environments
. Experience in using optical spectroscopies, x-ray diffraction, and other analytical techniques, as well as techniques available at national user facilities such as synchrotron x-ray, neutron and laser sources
. Experience in the interpretation of vibrational spectra and both powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction patterns
. Experience in using high-pressure/high-temperature technologies such as diamond anvil cells, large volume presses, and resistive and laser heating techniques
. This position requires good communication skills via scientific publications and regular technical presentations and the ability to work with a team.
. Additional information may be found at http://www.orau.org/ARLPostdocFellowship/applicants/wmrd/wmrd-material-b... under opportunity "Static and Dynamic Response of Materials to Extreme Conditions"

The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to a total of three years based upon recommendation of the US Army Research Laboratory and subject to availability of funds. The fellowship appointment is full-time at US Army Research Laboratory and does not incur any formal obligation to the government of the United States. Interested parties should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including publications) and brief statement of research interests to Dr. Jennifer Ciezak Jenkins (jennifer.a.ciezak-jenkins@us.army.mil), who will provide more specific information regarding current research and scientific support of the research proposal development. Applicants will then be required to complete the online application at http://www.orau.org/arlpostdocfellowship/applicants/apply.htm
