Applications are invited for a post‐doctoral research position in the Mineral Physics Laboratory at the Department of Geological Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences, the University of Texas at Austin. The position is funded by the Energy Frontier Research in Extreme Environments (EFree) Center of the Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs), in which the UT Austin is an academic partner, and the NSF Geophysics Program. Candidates should have a strong experience and knowledge in high‐pressure diamond‐anvil cell techniques, synchrotron‐based X‐ray spectroscopic techniques, and laser spectroscopic systems. Knowledge in high‐pressure elasticity, electronic properties (e.g., spin transitions), inelastic X‐ray scattering (IXS), and/or Brillouin and pulsed laser spectroscopies (e.g., impulsive stimulated light scattering) will be first considered.

Candidates are expected to travel to synchrotron radiation centers such as the Advanced Photon Source to conduct high pressure‐temperature experiments to investigate novel materials properties relevant to EFree‐related research (e.g., hydrogen storage, high Tc iron arsenic superconductors, superhard materials) and/or planetary mineral physics. The initial appointment for the position is for one year, but is expected to be renewed for the second year. The annualized salary is $50,000 or higher.
