[20120131] PhD at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland

The Earth and Planetary Science Laboratory at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne invites applications for a pre-doctoral research assistantship in experimental high-pressure mineral physics and chemistry. The Ph.D. candidate position is funded for three years and is open now until filled.

Research may focus on phase equilibria, equation of state, melting, element partitioning, and/or texture of possible mineral assemblages of the Earth’s core-mantle boundary region. Our new laboratory in the Institute for Condensed Matter Physics at EPFL has facilities for high-pressure spectroscopic studies at a wide range of high and low temperatures and will use extensive sample characterization facilities at EPFL and synchrotron techniques at ESRF (France), SLS (Switzerland), and APS (USA). Previous experience with synchrotron and/or diamond anvil cell techniques is a plus but not required for the position. A recent Master’s degree in Physics, Earth Science or Chemistry is required.

For more information, interested applicants should send a cover letter and CV to Prof. Philippe Gillet, philippe.gillet@epfl.ch.
